    MacGregor, Neil (N. M.)

    (Robert) Neil MacGregor, 1946-
    Editor of The Burlington Magazine from September 1981 until February 1987. Contributor from 1976 until 1999.
    Neil MacGregor is an art historian and museum director. Born in Glasgow, he read French and German at New College, Oxford, and studied philosophy at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. He took an LLB in Law at the University of Edinburgh and was called to the Scottish Bar.
    MacGregor then studied 17th and 19th century art at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London under Anthony Blunt. For six years, 1975 to 1981, MacGregor was a lecturer in the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Reading and a part-time lecturer at the Courtauld Institute of Art, which he left when he was appointed Editor of the Burlington Magazine. In 1987 he became Director of the National Gallery.
    Neil MacGregor has been Director of the British Museum since August 2002.
