All three pieces are engraved with the same crest and have a shagreen box (not shown). A pair of salts on three mask and dolphin feet. Exceptional and historically important Louis XV commode inlaid with kingswood cartouches on tulipwood borders, framed by highly original ormolu mounts. Louis XV period, 1748-1762. The commode is stamped B. V. R. B. for Bernard Van Risen Burgh, official court ébéniste for Louis XV and his mistress Madame de Pompadour. His mark is found only on the most outstanding pieces. It also bears the mark B. V. for the Château de Bellevue. This château was commissioned by Louis XV for the Marquise de Pompadour and built by the architect A. J. A fine pair of heavy (47 oz.) sauceboats which are engraved under the lip with a contemporary coat of arms. They were made in London in 1744 by Peter Archambo I. This leading Hugenot silversmith, then working at the Golden Cup, Coventry Street, Piccadilly was closely associated with Paul de Lamerie and his son was apprenticed to this great craftsman who may have inspired the fine cast masked feet and applied swags of grapes and vine leaves and massive scroll handles which are found on these sauceboats. The arms are those of Clements impaling Gore for Nathaniel Clements who was born in 1705. He was M. P. for Duleek from 1727 to 1760, Cavan 1761 to 1768 and 1776 to 1777 and for Leitrim in 1764. He was also one of the tellers of the Exchequer and Deputy Vice Treasurer of Ireland. He married on 31st January, 1729, Hannah, daughter of the Very Rev. William Gore, Dean of Down and died in 1777. In 1759, Mrs. Delaney the famous wife of the Dean of Dublin, wrote of them; 'Not hear of Mr. and Mrs. Clements! Why she is finer than the finest lady in England. Dresses, furniture, house, equipage - excelling all. Mr. Clements is - her husband. They set out in life very young and very humble, though both of good families. He was a favourite of the famous Luke Gardiner's and has gathered together by degrees an immense fortune, if one may judge by the magnificence of his living; and what is quite surprising, they are both very moderate in understanding, and yet there is a cleverness and elegance in everything about them that is beyond what could be expected.' Justus Danckerts. A set of the world and the four continents published in Amsterdam 1680. The Danckerts were a family of Amsterdam publishers and engravers. Justus Danckerts (1635-1701) was the son of Cornelius Danckerts the elder and he was an engraver, map-seller and publisher who flourished in the Kalverstraet, Amsterdam. Louis XVI Cabinet. Commode à Vantaux by J. Pafrat, JME. Veneered on oak with mahogany and with five fluted pillars of white marble. Richly mounted with bronze chased and gilded. The top is of white marble. The low cabinet with two doors in front contains two drawers in the frieze. The drawers enclose two horizontal drawers in the interior. The gilt bronze mounts in the frieze are backed by burnished gilt bronze panels. Stamped: J. PAFRAT (in three places). Paris, c 1790-1791. Height 37in (95cm) Width 59in (150cm) Depth 26in (76cm). Jean Jacques Pafrat became a 'maitre-ebeniste' in 1785 and died in 1794. Pafrat had worked with Martin Carlin, and on the latter's death in 1785 Pafrat took over his workshop. Although Pafrat was a master for only a short time, his work can be found in the Royal palaces of Versailles, Fontainebleau and Saint Cloud. M. Christian Baulez, in 'Il mobile francese dal Medioevo al 1925', page 101, ill. 31 (Fabbri 1981), illustrates a secretaire by Pafrat which, together with a commode en suite, was sequestrated in 1793 from the apartment of the Duc d'Orleans at the Chateau Le Rancy. Behind the gilt bronze back plates were found pages of the Official Gazette dated 1790-1791, announcing new laws promulgated by the Revolutionary government. Presumably, when first assembled these panels were somewhat loose and the pages were placed behind to keep them firm. These pages have been preserved.

A fine rare Louis XVI gold mounted lacquer aide-memoire Paris c 1781. The panels applied with a chased and burnished gold portrait of Athanase de Lomenie de Brienne, verso with the crowned family arms. Containing its original agenda with a map of Paris and its suburbs and a calendar for 1781, a hand drawn map of the Brienne property. (The Lomenie acquired the County of Brienne in 1623, Henri Auguste Lomenie de Brienne negociated the marriage of Henrietta of France with the future King Charles I, 1624). The most celebrated member of the family was Etienne Charles (1727-1794) member of the Académie Francaise (1770), Minister of State (1787), Archbishop of Sens (1788). His name is intimately linked with the proclamation of the Rights of Monarchy. Athanase de Lomenie Comte de Brienne (1730-1794) was Minister of State (1788).
