[Asprey, 165-169 New Bond Street, London] A George III Ebonised Striking Bracket Clock by Matthew Dutton, London. Height 16ins.
Attributed works:
[Christie's, 8 King Street, London] A George III Ormolu-Mounted Mahogany Dressing and Writing-Commode, 60in. (155cm.) Wide; 36in. (91.5cm.) High; 27½in. (70cm.) Deep. Sold at Christie's London on 6th July 1989 for £1.1 Million. This dressing and writing-commode is attributed to the rare cabinet-maker John Channon. Channon set up a cabinet-making business in St. Martin's Lane in 1737 and died in 1783. It is almost certainly one of two supplied circa 1760 to Alderman Beckford for his Italianate mansion Fonthill Splendens in Wiltshire. Alderman Beckford, William Beckford's father, was one of the richest men in England and Fonthill Splendens was celebrated for its size and sumptuous furnishings. The companion commode from Fonthill Splendens is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
