[Weinreb & Douwma Ltd, 39 Great Russell Street, London] The first printed maps of the British Isles appeared in the Geographia of Ptolemy. This woodcut is from the most important edition published at Strasbourg in 1513 by J. Esslar and G. Ubelin. The supplement of twenty contemporary maps by the German cartographer Martin Waldsemüller made it the first modern atlas of the world and marked the peak of Ptolemy's influence on cartography.
