The delicate lattice work backs were made by gluing strips of Cuban mahogany together to form an early type of plywood, the same process used for galleried tables during the middle of the 18th century. The blind fretwork on the front legs is in this case cut out and applied to the solid mahogany leg, but is more often incised.

The gold leaf was then applied to the surface which had already been prepared with a white gesso and a coloured ochre. The gold was then burnished with a piece of agate.

[Sotheby's Parke Bernet, 34-35 New Bond Street, London, UK] A William IV mahogany wine cooler, c.1820, sold in July 1978 for £240. Inlaid with an ebony line and on ebonised lion paw feet, the wine cooler is lined with lead sheet and with lead-covered divisions for bottles. The ice used for chilling would have been cut from a nearby lake during the winter months and stored in the ice house. The ice house, constructed of brick or stone often in the shape of an igloo, was positioned near the house, but in a sheltered spot; it was usual for wine coolers to have a drain plug in the base.

The vermin, lured inside by the bait, would have been crushed to death by the massive oak block. The photograph shows the trap in a closed position. Probably English provincial, c.1800.
