77. The capture of the 'Royal prince' in 1666, by Willem van de Velde the Elder, 1672. Pen and ink with wash on linen, 109 by 146.5 cm. Van de Velde depicted this incident of a four-day naval battle in the second Anglo-Dutch war of 1665-67 as official artist to the Dutch Admiralty. It is documented in a list of the ships recorded by the artist for his employers, for which he was paid a total of 500 guilders.

During his years in the service of the Tsar at St Petersburg (1758-63), Le Prince was often called upon to portray the inhabitants of the Asiatic provinces. This laid the foundations for his successful introduction of 'russerie' into Paris after his return to France. A smaller version of this composition was exhibited in the Salon as Un Drogman du Roi de France.
