[Sotheby's, 34-35 New Bond Street, London] A Cipollino marble seated Togatus figure, adapted as St. Peter in the second half of the 16th century, with gilt bronze head, hands and feet, formerly in the Ludovisi Collection, 38.7cm (15¼in) high. Estimate: £250,000-350,000. The statue is documented in three inventories of the Villa Ludovisi in Rome, dated 1623, 1633 and 1665. In the early 1620s Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi was forming one of the greatest collections of statuary and paintings of the period, including many antiquities.
