The top has Sèvres porcelain plaques, date mark for 1774, painted by Dodin, surrounding a central plaque after Carle van Loo's Le Concert du Saltan, which is in the Wallace Collection. The sale, held in association with the Société des Bains de Mer, totalled £1,390,000. Improvisation mit Pferden by Wassily Kandinsky, signed and dated 1911, sold in New York on 17th May for $365,000 (£199,454), an auction record for a painting by the artist. The previous record was $300,000, also achieved in New York, in 1971. The total for this sale of Impressionist and Modern paintings and sculpture was $5,872,500 (£3,209,016) including nine other new auction records for various artists.
