[ Entwistle, Seventy South Audley Street, London ] This magnificent carved wood ancestral portrait or bieri from the Fang Tribe of Gabon epitomises what is perhaps the most sophisticated of African sculptural traditions. Its bold cubistic conception is tempered by an infinite serenity and mystery appropriate to its role as the spiritual guardian of an ancestor. It was formerly in the collection of the late Helena Rubinstein and measures thirty-five centimetres in height.
