[ Ronald A. Lee, 1-9 Bruton Place, London ] This magnificent firearm is entirely covered in inlaid horn and profusely decorated with engraved ivory scenes. Last quarter of the 16th century. The engraved and gilded lockplate bearing the guildmark of Strasbourg with maker's mark E. G. with bird below; This mark referring to Elias Gessler (New Stockel 7471). Most of the scenes are taken directly from engravings by Virgil Solis. The lemon-shaped ivory butt is secured by a silver gilt butt cap and is finely engraved with 8 various figures, including Bacchus, Mars, Apollo, Minerva and Ceres; the group is surmounted by the Arms of Italia, Francia, Germania and Hispania. The reverse side of the lockplate depicts the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe; the underside includes the bagpiper taken from a 1514 engraving by Albrecht Dürer; these panels are supported by other small panels of interest; the gilded barrel bearing the engraved figure of St. George and the Dragon with decorated and engraved strapwork; the gilded lockplate includes a rabbit and a squirrel. The mechanism is of the typical wheel-lock design of the period. Length of gun: 81 cms (35 inches).
