[Christie's, 502 Park Avenue, New York] Joachim Wtewael (c. 1566-1638), The Battle Between the Gods and the Titans, Oil on Copper, 8¼ × 11 in. (21 × 28 cm.). Estimate: $400,000-600,000
Western art unattributed:
[The Grosvenor House Antique Fair/ Wartski, 14 Grafton Street, London] A Gold Tabernacle Pendant Tablet in the International Gothic Style. An extremely rare Franco-Burgundian engraved gold reliquary triptych with a free-standing gold group fashioned in relief and enamelled en ronde bosse, of the Madonna and Child between two angels who rise from the clouds bearing between them a crown; some restoration to enamel. The two hinged doors are set with carved rock-crystal panels and these and the principal ogee arch are crested with trefoil crockets with, below the tenderly expressed group, a double reliquary compartment. The suspension ring and ball finial, a later addition, is similar to that on The Man of Sorrows pendant triptych in the Schatzkammer of the Munich Residenz Museum, the only known comparable reliquary of this period or quality. The case itself is exquisitely stipple-engraved both within and outside, with trails of leaves and flowers. This jouel or joyau as it was defined in the late fourteenth century French inventories, must be recognised as one of the sweetest fruits of the luxurious Court of the Dukes of Burgundy - said to be the wealthiest country in the world at that time - which was enlivened by the brilliant patronage of Jean Duc de Berry, the uncle of the French King, Charles VI. Probably Paris, 1380-1420. Overall height 5.3 cm (2$frac{1}{8}$ in).

[The Grosvenor House Antiques Fair/Wartski Limited, 14 Grafton Street, London] A Profane Reliquary. An oval gold boîte à portrait with a pendant pearl and suspension loop, set with rectangular faceted and rose-cut diamonds, enamelled opaque white overall and decorated with painted enamel lilies and fritillaries and scrolling foliage, the hinged cover applied with a diamond-set sword surmounted by an electoral crown enamelled translucent scarlet. The interior of the pendant (centre) is painted with the miniature likeness of Friedrich Wilhelm, Elector of Brandenburg (1640-1688) in armour and wearing a lace collar and an embroidered sash; the interior of the cover is enamelled with a ducal coronet and the initials F W C for Friedrich Wilhelm Churfürst. The portrait is based upon an engraving by Jeremy Farlett which is dated 1647. Friedrich Wilhelm is traditionally credited with having laid the foundation for the subsequent strength of Prussia. This boîte à portrait exactly follows the tradition of such Royal pendant jewels notably exemplified by those in the Kunsthistorishes Museum in Vienna of circa 1572 attributed to Dujardin with miniature portraits by François Clouet of Catherine de Medici and Charles IX of France and that in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London of circa 1600 by Daniel Mignot containing the painting of Queen Elizabeth by Nicholas Hilliard. The boîte à portrait in general, has been aptly specified by Torben H. Colding as a profane reliquary. North German, circa 1647. Overall height 6 cm ($2frac{3}{8}$ in).
