[ Entwistle, 70 South Audley Street, London ] This extremely rare hunting-horn or oliphant belongs to a small group of objects which have come to be known as Afro-Portuguese ivories. Executed to Portuguese royal orders by craftsmen from the Sherbro tribe of Sierra Leone production would seem to have begun around 1500 AD during the reign of Manuel I and extended some hundred and fifty years. They are among the earliest and rarest surviving works of art from West Africa and are almost all in museums, the greatest collection being in the British Museum. The present piece is carved in low relief with European hunting scenes and emblazoned with the arms of Manuel I. and with his personal emblem, the armillary sphere. It measures forty-nine and a half centimeters in length.
