[Ronald A. Lee, 1-2 Bruton Place, London] On the 24th August, 1666, Samuel Pepys' diary entry reads thus "Comes Sympson, to set up my other new presses for my books to my most extraordinary satisfaction; so that I think it will be as noble a closet as any man hath." These book presses are now in Magdalene College, Cambridge and together with a pair made for Dyrham Park (one now in the Victoria & Albert Museum), another made for Cuckfield Park, Sussex and the example illustrated here, they are the first recorded glazed-fronted bookcases ever made in England. Constructed in wainscot oak, the illustrated bookcase is nearest in detail to the Pepys' examples and was certainly constructed by Sympson, the joiner, during the reign of Charles II.
