[Sotheby's, Mentmore, Buckinghamshire] One of a pair of Louis XV carved giltwood console tables probably designed by Contant d'Ivry and possibly made by N. Q. Foliot, c. 1755, 91 by 152 cm. Eriksen, Early Neo-Classicism in France, plate 26, illustrates a very similar pair of tables, supplied c. 1755 for the Salon in Count J. H. E. Bernstorff's house in Copenhagen, and states that the attribution to Contant d'Ivry can hardly be doubted. It is probable that Foliot provided all the pieces of menuiserie - table, chair and mirror frames - for the Bernstorff house and it is possible that he was also the maker of the present tables, which are very much in the same style and of the same quality as the Bernstorff pieces.

[Sotheby's, Mentmore, Buckinghamshire] A fine and rare Italian ivory figure, probably of Cosimo de Medici (1519-1574), now mounted on part of a French or Italian gilt bronze case for a table clock, 16th century, 30 cm. The long neck, rather protruding eyes and position of the head recall the bust of Cosimo de Medici by Cellini of 1545, although the present example shows him in older age. The armour which he wears is also typical of a parade armour of the mid-16th century in the classical manner, but is not that of 1546 in the Bargello, Florence, which is said to have belonged to him. An ivory figure of a man in classical armour of the size in the Bargello (Carrand Collection) probably representing Mars, is apparently the work of the same master. The present ivory also has certain affinities with a terracotta figure of Cosimo's father Giovanni in classical armour in the Wallace Collection, Catalogue, no. S57

[Sotheby's, Mentmore, Buckinghamshire] A rare Antwerp tortoiseshell and rosewood writing cabinet, inlaid with pewter, brass, copper and mother-of-pearl, c. 1705, 119 by 91 cm. The decoration is based on engravings from Gesandtschaft der Ost Indischen Gesellschaft by Johann Neuhof, Amsterdam, 1669, and Asia by Johann Christian Bernn, 1681. Kreisel, Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels, Spätbarock und Rokoko, figures 318 and 322 illustrates a writing table of very similar form and technique made for Max-Emanuel of Bavaria, from Schloss Schleissheim, now in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, inventory number R3362 and also a cabinet in the Museum des Kunsthandwerks, Leipzig, figure 320. Both pieces are there ascribed to Augsburg. The Max-Emanuel writing-cabinet was in the 1976 Exhibition: Kurfürst Max-Emanuel Bayern und Europa um 1700 where it was attributed to Antwerp.
