[Ader & Picard, 12 rue Favart, Paris] Cotelle Views (from a series of 12) of the gardens of Versailles. Gouache, 17 ⅞ × 14 ⅛ in. each. For the Gallery of the Grand Trianon, Louis XIV had commissioned 21 paintings by Cotelle intended to represent the most interesting and picturesque aspects of the gardens of Versailles. Before painting them, Cotelle made 20 gouache models. For these, and the paintings completed in 1690, he was given 13,600 livres in payment. The paintings are still in situ. As for the gouaches, according to an inventory drawn up in 1733, they remained in the Royal Collection. Today, 14 are known to exist: 2 in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and 12 in the Heine collection to be sold on March 22nd.
