[Ronald A. Lee plc, 1-9 Bruton Place, London, UK] This quite exceptional small cabinet on stand must surely rank as one of the most exciting and important pieces of English furniture to have appeared on the market in recent times. The cabinet stands at 47½″ high. Although the shelved interior is fitted with mahogany slides to accommodate coins and medals, there is evidence that this was not the original use. The galleried superstructure is made of holly and ebony and as with the exceedingly fine carving on the main body of the piece, would appear to be intended to simulate ivory. For comparison, the use of ivory inlay in Queen Charlotte's jewel cabinet made by William Vile in 1761 is the best example. Several other features such as quartered veneers on the front; the canted door to the side and the style of hinge fixing, can be associated with William Vile. The cabinet itself bears wonderful applied carving in intricate detail, possibly the work of Sefferin Alken and as is the case with the rest of the cabinet, the state of preservation is perfect. The mouldings are of ebony. The original concept was clearly most sumptious - age has softened the overall effect. The cabinet was formerly in the possession of the Trollope-Bellew family of Casewick House, Lincolnshire. However, it is likely that a previous provenance is more probable either through marriage or acquisition. Research will hopefully reveal this.
