[Emanouel Antiques Limited, 64 South Audley Street, London, UK] Elephant Incense Burners Cloissone inlaid with turquoise and coral. Early 19th century. Provenance. Originally in the Temple of the Nine Dragons, in the province of Kwantow. They were removed during the Japanese occupation and taken into hiding. Later they were taken to the palace of Chau Mau Chang in the province of Kunming. During the Mao revolution they were once again hidden, then later they were disposed of by the Chinese government by various sources. In the Chinese High Festivals and on Holy Days they were paraded around the town and streets bedecked in flowers and pretty maidens in their national dress. Size - height 73″ width 48″ depth 24″. Unique - the only pair in the world.

Deceptively simple in appearance, it is a triumph of design and intricate, time consuming carving. 6 1/8 inches (15.6 cm) long, 4 9/16 inches (11.6 cm) wide. Carved in the Chien Lung period, 1736-1795. A recorded work of art, "fingerprinted" and registered with The International Art Registry, Ltd. On file with INTERPOL.
